For what it's worth there are a couple of New Process Gear engineers on the
Mopar Mailing list that recomend synthetic oils in there stuff. Dakota
transfer case and 5spd.
I use Mobil 1 15w-50 in my turbo Daytona(s) engine and 5w-30 in the gear box.
My old turbo Daytona went 240,000 miles with no engine or turbo problems, I
currently have 97,000 on my Shelbny Daytona. I currently have 202,000 miles
on my Dakota 3.9 v6 and it has only seen convential oils in the engine,
tranny, transfer case and differentials. My own feelings are the synthetic
is worth the extra cost for the turbo engine but I do not feel it buys
enough extra protection in a none turbo engines to warrent the extra cost.
I have considered changing to Mobil 1 ATF in the tranny but there is no
drain in the torque converter and I am not prepared to pull the tranny to
switch. I will likely put it in the transfer case the next time I change it
and will likely use it in the differentials (non-posi) when I change the
next time.
The one place I highly recomend synthetic is for chassis grease. I have been
using either AMSOIL or Mobil 1 synthetic grease for almost 15 years now and
have not had to replace any front end or universal joints in over 500,000
miles.

Subject: Synthetic Fluids
Dakota-ers,
I hope I'm not rehashing a thrashed subject, but I've search
my archives and not found much info on synthetic fluids in
the Dak. thread. I remember reading a couple of messages
where owners put sythetic ATF and gear oil in, but can't
recall hearing a discussion on the pros and cons. Please
comment if you are a syn. ATF or gear oil user.
Does anyone know if using syn. ATF voids the factory
drivetrain warranty?
I also thought about putting in syn. gear oil in the rear, but I
couldn't come up with a good reason to crack open the
factory-sealed case (yet).
What brands/weights have ya'll used and what is your
seat-o-th'-pants conclusions?
I search the WWW for info on syn. lube but all I could find
was ad hype and expensive SAE articles (www.sae.org).
I already use Mobil 1 oil and would be inclined to go w/ Mobil
Syn. ATF, if I could find it. Pep Boys does not carry ANY
syn. ATF!
Thanks,
klm
