Hi Ron!
I just ordered some speakers for my Dakota to replace the stock ones... I
used a Crutchfield magazine for the sizes needed, and then did some
wheeling and dealing as far as prices go... To replace the rear speakers
I purchased Pioneer TS-A5705, which list in Crutchfield for $99.95/pr. I
was able to get them for $60.00/pr. For the fronts I bought Pioneer
TS-A1305 which is a 5 1/4 inch Chrysler-specific mounting-type. These
Crutchfield has for $89.95/pr. and I got 'em for $55.00/pr. I then
called Crutchfield and ordered the wiring harness adapters for the
speakers ($6 rear/$4 front), a trim panel removal tool ($8.95) and a
Master Sheet (instructions on how to get at the stock speaker locations,
blah, blah...) These speakers will fit perfectly in the stock locations
with no modifications necessary (aside from the wiring harness adapters).
As far as your 2-channel amp, and its wiring issues... I'm not going to
touch that one... Back in '95 I added a Pioneer DEH-65DH Chrysler/GM-fit
CD head unit to replace the stock stereo (very easy install) and it was
35Wx4 so it's got enough power so as to not need an external amp. Then
over the summer I added an 80-watt powered Bazooka subwoofer tube behind
the drivers' seat for a little extra bass (*NOT* overkill, adds quite
some dimension to the music) I consider myself an audiophile, not
somebody looking to rattle the neighbors' windows... All in all, even
with the stock speakers, the upgraded head unit, and the bass tube, it's
a good-sounding stereo, and once I replace the cheesy paper-coned stock
speakers with real ones, it should be even better.... good luck!!

I've got a Club Cab with stock 4-speaker cassette stereo, and
have been considering the following sound system modifications.
I'd like to know what the other list members have done along these
lines, in order to buy components that will fit with little or no
modifications (and hopefully use as much of the equipment that I
currently have as possible). I don't want to cut/splice any part of
the factory wire harnesses, but am willing to add to the stock
harness.
Mod. 1: Replace stock rear 5x7 speakers.
What speakers work well in the Dakota application? I'm not interested
in heavy modification, and would prefer units that fit behind the
stock grille (though I would consider new grilles as long as I don't
have to cut up the stock panels).
Mod. 2: Replace stock front 5.25 speakers.
Ditto (what speakers work well with no mods?).
Mod. 3: Use my Coustic 2 channel amp to power the rear speakers,
with the current stereo's speaker-level outputs.
This might be a slight bitch, as I want to do as little drilling
as possible. I was hoping that I could mount the amp under the
passenger-side seat, and run inputs from the rear speaker connectors
to the amp, and run outputs back to the rear speakers. How easy
is it to run wire under the carpets in this beast?
Mod. 4: Upgrade factory cassette head with my pullout CD receiver.
This isn't that big of a deal, since I can buy adapters to fit the
chassis in the stock location, and hook it in to the wiring harness.
Given Mod 3 above, it would require that I run new line-level outputs
to the amp under the passenger seat.
Thanks for any help!
Ron
