Driving in 4WD on dry pavement will cause increased tire wear from
scrubbing because of not exactly matched front and rear drive ratios.
Consequently the front and rear wheels are driven at different speeds, and
you can imagine what that might do for the tires. Maybe you can't imagine
what it might do to the drivetrain, but it will bind up pretty well too.

Drove my Dakota on dry pavement to 10-15 miles a couple of times due to
terminal forgetfulness (stupidity has also been mentioned!). Took about
half a mile with the transfer case shifter in 2-HI for it to shift out of
4-HI. Messing up the transfer case is NOT something you want to do unless
you can look in the bank account and find lots of money with no better
place to spend it than repairing transfer cases. Heard $1500 bandied
about at a local Dodge dealership for repairing transfer case internals 5
yrs ago.
