I didn't want to have to state the obvious - of course you don't lock the
wheels on any surface where you need to steer. But in straight line braking
tests as reported in various magazines, anti-lock brakes actually increase
stopping distances in snow, loose gravel and sand. The reason is that the
plowing effect of this stuff piling up in front of the sliding tire reduces
stopping distances. Some magazines, like AutoWeek, promote an ABS on/off
switch specifically so the brakes can be disabled in conditions where ABS
would increase stopping distances.
