Your symptoms are very similar to problems that I had with my '95 club
cab 3.9L auto 4X4. The problem with the overdrive shifting seems to be
normal operation for the transmission. The "racing engine" on cold
starts is another matter. Mine was nost noticeable if the truck had not
been driven for a couple of days. My discription of the problem was that
it (transmision) was acting like a manual in which the clutch was
slipping. After traveling about a city block, the problem would go
away. Without going into all the trips to the dealer and no problem
found ( "The codes check good" ), I finally got them to replace the
'Converter Drainback Valve.' This device is supposed to keep the
transmission fluid from draining out of the torque converter when the
vehicle is not being driven (overnight, etc.). There was a TSB on an
earlier year, but not on the '95s. Fight with the dealer and make him
replace the valve.
