My '92 was doing this and I screwed around with all sorts of stuff until
the dealer said that the timing was all hosed up (never did get a real
good explanation of what the distributor was or wasn't doing). They
changed the distributor/oil pump shaft and gear, distributor body and
distributor bushing under warranty. After they set the timing right on
the second trip it's run nearly 10k miles without a problem.
