Re: shortening axle housing

Hey guys, here's the poop on axles & wheels.
mother Mopar made three versions of the 83/4 rearend .
they are.
2707041 casting -considered the "light duty" version of the three.this
housing has a
tapered pinion, making it the "weakest" of the 3, however this version
came in the 340 automatic cars until 71' and is MUCH stronger than any
81/4 rear!
2707042 casting-the best of the three. this uses a 13/4"pinion which is
the largest of the three. this is the best version. It was used on
everything except HEMI 4-spd, which came ala' dana60
2707089 casting- in late 69' ma Mopar redesigned the 42 case and put a
11/2 inch
bushed pinion which became the only 83/4 made after 71'. this unit is as
good as the
42 case and if you are looking is probably what you will find & will be
the cheapest to build as racers like myself gobble up the 42 cases!!
These numbers can be found on the drivers side of the pig right behind
the yoke.
Morale of the story; unless your building a 600 horsepower motor use
whatever you find first!
I also have been looking into the axle swap idea.I coulden't remember
so I went & checked. The stock Dak housing measures 54" . My A-body
housing is 52".I believe, if memory serves me corruptly that a B-body
housing is 53". The spring perches would have to be rewelded to work
properly. Moser Eng. is a very well known name
here in Indiana [since they are here!!] and they do quality work at a
reasonable price!
Our drag car has Moser axles, narrowed housing, and spool.
Another point to ponder is if you are going to narrow your rear you must
by at least 3", this is the amount they have to remove in order to r&r
your hub.! We had ours narrowed 3" for our application. Moser charges
$150 to narrow. and their axles are $289, any length, spline, bolt
pattern. YES they can do the &%#@!$&^(*&*$ Dak pattern.
I also went through the wheel BS, and ended up with 15x8 Weld Tomohawk's
and 31x10.5's. I hate them for copying ME!!!!!!
I hope this helps

As far as wheel mods go, check out Stockton Wheel 648 W.Fremont st.
Stockton CA, 95203. 800-395-wheel. They've been around a long time. I
have a friend with an 85' Guttless with a 455, OOOOOHHHH!! For $150 a
wheel they took his stock Olds rallye's [14x7] and made them into 15x8
including chrome!! Bty, he has a Moser 9" furd under it [33/4" narrowed].

Good hunting
