wheels, tires, ABS, '97 vs old Dakotas

I was looking at the Dunlop web site (http://www.dunloptire.com/). They
have data on the G/T Qualifier tires people were recommending. Their
data for the 245/60 and 255/60 sizes are with 7" rims (narrower than I
expected), so I guess I'm not so amazed after all that people are using
the stock rims with really wide tires. Unfortunately they don't give a
minimum recommended rim size for this tire.

A friend just got a '97. His door frame sticker also says the rims are
6" wide, and they are the 7" rims. So maybe the preditor wheels are
6.5" not 6"? Where did you get your info Kuk? Anybody measured one
when the tires were off?

Has anybody put different size tires on front and rear with 4 wheel ABS?
Does Dodge have anything to say about this? The system is the stock
rear wheel ABS with the front ABS unit added on, so I'm not sure if the
information from the front vs. rear wheels is ever compared. Doing 100
yard long powerslides in the rain doesn't seem to bother the ABS
computer any, and it didn't get flustered when I was doing lots of
donuts mixed with ABS testing in the rain either. Maybe I should try
lightly applying the brakes while doing a powerslide?

After looking at the '97 (I haven't driven one yet) I have mixed
feelings, but overall I prefer my '95. The '97 has much less room under
the hood, a few inches less front to back, and the fenders take up a
bunch of room, and the new air cleaner takes up a bunch of room. I
don't see how the Doug Thourly (MOPAR) headers could ever fit. Why did
they put 215 tires on 7" rims? Why not 235s? It is almost silly
looking with this combination. The new climate control finally has a
defrost + foot heating position, but they took out the recirculation
option and the AC button. The storage compartment in the doors and
center armrest (with bench seats) is nice, but the center section
doesn't slide back and forth with the passenger seat anymore. I'd
have to drive it to decide if I like the new location for the cruise
control switches. I would like the improved turning radius. The new
grill is a but too much in the chrome version, but the painted version
looks nice.
