Hi Matt:

A couple of us who have purchased 97 Dakotas have been discussing a noise
that we thought was pinging for about a week. Mine started at 2,000 rpm and
didn't change with temperature, load or octane rating. Many people from
this list thought it was injector clatter. It doesn't sound quite like
pinging that I have had on other vehicles.

If you've found one that was really pinging, I would suggest that the dealer
needs to do some adjustments.

I believe changing the thermostat temperature with throw the computer for a
loop.

I have a 318/auto and get 14 mpg in town, 17 town/hghway and expect 20 mpg
on the highway.
