Engine plant strike continues

The strike by UAW local 51 against the Mound Road engine plant
continues - according to a Wall Street Journal article today.

One of the sticking points is Chrysler's plan to move driveshaft-
related work to Dana Corp. The UAW also claims Chrysler is hiring
younger workers in favor of senior UAW workers. Chrysler says it
will hire 800 senior workers from Mound Road when it starts up a
new engine plant in the Detroit area next year. Chrysler does
not want to adhere to the unions seniority rules.

Chryslers sales reportedly haven't been hurt yet - there is enough
stock on hand - but Chrysler is losing production of 3000 vehicles
a day, which will be hard to make up, since the plants were running
flat-out before the strike.

The dispute is the worst since a 12-day strike in 1985.
