performance suggestions ?

Hi, this is my first time posting. I had a 91 V6 CC 2WD that I put a
slide-in camper on. the mileage dropped in 1/2 to 10 MPG.
So I figured when I got my 95 V8 2WD the mileage would improve . NOPE
!
I just returned from a 2500 mi. trip & the avg. mpg was about 10 ! The
only difference was the ability to hold speed when climbing hills. I
know the wind resistance is the biggest factor as the air is "scooped"
between the cabover & the cab. In fact, the truck won't hold speed in OD
(overdrive) over 63 without downshifting (unless I "draft" a large
vehicle). At 40-50 the mileage is great, pretty close to the unloaded
mpg. But it is necessary to drive 70+ to keep from being "blown off the
road" by the wind gusts created by kamikaze semi's travelling at 80+.
I would like to keep the RPM's in the 3000 range(I have the 3.50
ratio gears), which means about 67 with the OD off. However, even when
drafting a semi or large motorhome the mileage doesn't improve hardly at
all. (i got 11 mpg)
Whether I am travelling at 75 in OD (drafting) or 63 with the OD off,
the mileage remains constant.
So anyway I am loooking to do something about this problem. Most or
the postings on this group seem to be related to making one's dak. a
"street racer".
I would like to avoid spending large $$, but a few hundred bucks would
be fine. Also I am not a mechanic (and tend to screw-up when trying to
be), so any mods should be simple/foolproof. Also a description of the
benefit for me to decide if this would achieve the desired effect.

direct e-mail would be best, unless something would benefit all
owners. I will pass along the info to anyone who asks.
thanks

                         digitally yours, El Billo
