Guys;
I hope you have alot better luck on this one than I did. I went through the
shotgun approach to solving a similar problem with my '90 4x4 3.9L Auto (A500).
The dealer made several attempts to fix this problem, each at my expense, and
the first 325 dollars of attempts didn't solve anything except making my
wallet lighter and some of the parts in my truck 'shinyer'!
Anyway, the dealer said the tranny O/D shifting was a symptom of an engine
problem and not the result of a tranny problem. Although I suspect they had
no idea what the problem was and the multiple trips to the shop bears this out.
the new shiny parts in my truck include: a SBEC, a EGR valve and a tranny
speed sensor. after all of these parts were changes with no help, the TPS was
changed. The dealer said he was reluctant to change this because the DBRII said
there was no problem with the Throttle Position Sensor. This did however seem
to correct the problem.
One minor difference I might add to my problem was that my O/D dashboard light
did not come on and go off with the tranny shifts. This almost sounds to me like
a wire is 'shorting' to ground due to wear someplace. you might want to check
this out.
Good luck
