Hey Tony;

Good question, a lot of us motorheads take for granted that everybody knows
how to turn a wrench or they wouldn't be on a list such as this. However,
the real reason most people are here is to educate themselves.

As for the rearend gears, what the numbers mean is for every one (1)
rotation of your axle, your drive shaft turns an amount of rotations based
on your gear ratio. i.e. for 3.55 gears your axle would make one
revolution and your drive shaft would make 3.55 revolutions. Fair enough?

There are many advantages and disadvantages either way, up or down,
depending on what you use the vehicle for (to many to list here), but stay
tuned to the list and I am sure you will gain some knowledge on the issue.

*Example*: theoretically if identical vehicles drove the same FLAT
distance, at the same speed, except one had 3.55 gear and one had 3.92
gear, the 3.55 should get better gas mileage, because his engine was
turning less RPM.

"the more you read the more you know, the more you know the more you
forget, the more you forget the less you know, the less you know the more
ignorant you are, therefore the more you read the more ignorant you become"

The above quote is for those of us that were trying to establish it in an
earlier post. Any questions? ;-)

I'm not too knowledgeble about rear end gears and the like. I read people
on this list mentioning 3.55 or 3.90 ratios and I'm wondering : 1. what
exactly does that mean and
2. whats the advantage of one over the other? Vice versa? Anyhow I'm sure
there are many on this list who know if anyone cares to share.
