If you are looking to make the most HP at WOT (wide open throttle)
then you should use an open element air cleaner such as the
"fresh air by Meldrum" setup (10" open element and K&N filter).
However, using this setup does provide you with alot of
annoying "hissing" noises from the throttle body while
accelerating.

The S-bar is what you have to fabricate to use an aftermarket
air cleaner. The factory setup has a flat bracket which bolts
to the throttle body (across the venturis - this blocks airflow).
The factory stud mounts in this bracket, and is offset to the
center. To use any other air cleaner, you need to make your
own stud in the shape of an S to give the proper offset (thus
the S-bar). The use of a fabricated S-bar also helps by itself,
because the factory mounting bracket is somewhat restrictive.
To what extent it helps, I don't know exactly.

The "horn" is something entirely different. Attached to the front
of the airbox is a "horn" shaped inlet. Removing this piece
seems to improve flow, and also gives you alot more sound
at WOT.

I think the two mods together (S-bar and "horn" removal) are
worth a little extra power, and they are essentially free.

I'd be surprised if they don't already have one for the '97 Dak
factory airbox. In the 10" open element air cleaner I believe
the filter is number E-1080.
