I'm not sure about the rest, but as far as figuring out the clearance
goes, I've got a couple of ideas:
I've got what amounts to a "mirror on a stick"; a mirror on a
telescoping rod. They're available at Sears for $9 or so, I think.
Anyway, you might be able to get a flashlight up there, and lay under
the truck while you stick a mirror up there to take a look at what
is happening.
Another option may be to get some clay, or Play-DOH, and put a few
balls of that on the top of the air cleaner. Carefully close the hood,
which should squash those balls down. Open it back up and measure 'em
to find out what your clearance is. You should probably do this in a
few places on the cleaner in case the clearance is different at different
spots.
Just a couple of thoughts... :)
