} Subject: Manual Transmission Problems

} I've been reading posts the past few days from many people who have
} noise and/or problems with their 5-speed manual transmissions. I have a
} '96 CC, 5.2L, 5-speed, 4X4 that also has the same drive train problems

I posted about the sounds my transmission makes. I'm not complaining.
I was just trying to give a data point for comparision to the guy who
was complaining about noise. Don't expect these transmissions to be
silent.

} I also have the same whining, whirring, and clanking noises from the
} transmission itself. It's so bad that I can feel the clanking in the
} gearshift lever when going over rough roads or a rail road track. It's
} much worse when the clutch is depressed, and} no load on the
} transmission. My dealer also says this is normal "drive line slack" and
} "gear clash" I have a hard time believing this, and they won't even look
} at the problem, they say there is nothing that can be done. I've found
} that I have the NV-3} 500 transmission. After reading the Dakota
} archives, it seems there has been posts about nosie and problems with
} this transmission before.

The clanking is the drive line slack. The V8, 5-speed, 4WD is the worst
possible combination for this. It is very noticable and very normal.
The 2WD isn't near as bad, so the transfer case must contribute quite a
bit of the slack.

} What do you guys think? Is this type of nosie normal? Has anybody
} had their's replaced or repaired? Has anybody had their's blow up on
} them?

There have been two reports on the list of NV3500 failures. Both broke
a shifting fork. Kuk's was making about double stock HP and being drag
raced. I think the other was also getting drag raced. I have not heard
of any gear failures. The same transmission is used with the 318 in the
RAM 1500.

} The 5 sp'd is described as heavy duty, which is how they must be
} describing what sure sound like straight cut gears in it (as opposed to
} helically cut gears which are quieter, but take a little more power to
} drive, maybe). The gear whine in the lower gears is pretty severe, but
} it's due to the gears. This ain't a close ratio car transmission
} consequently it doesn't shift like one or sound like one. Mine's got 78k
} miles on it and it's just about broken in (I hope).

The gears aren't straight cut, that would be really loud. Gear shapes
are quite a science, so I'm not sure exaclty why the NV3500 is a little
noisy, buy a little gear noise never hurt anybody.
