it shifts around 4200. When I get on it, it shifts much higher (about
5100-5200). Which as most of you know is well over red-line (4700). Is
there any need for concern? More importantly, why the wide range of shift
points?

I believe the shifts are done by the computer on the 97's so I would not be
too concerned aslo the is a rev limiter built in to the computer so over rev
should also not be a problem. Also I have read for optimum performance on
autos 500-800 over max HP rpm could be better for performance. I would not
be concerned about your shifting points if all else seems normal.
My 2 cents
