Subject: Dakota Mailing List PROBLEM!!
This message is going out to approximately 340 members of the
dakota mailing list. There are actually more than that, but I didn't
have a more recent membership list. :P
I just got back into town only to find a mess of e-mail messages from
DML'ers asking why they'd been unsubscribed, or why they couldn't post,
etc.
The answer is... I don't know. :P Well, I do know that somehow,
everyone was unsubscribed from the list. Some of you may know that I
don't work at SUNY Fredonia anymore (fredonia.edu). The computers
(including the one the dakota mailing list is on) were snatched up
by a different department, a bunch of people were laid off (including
me), etc. The sad thing is that these people don't really know what
they're doing. :P Either they screwed something up, or they
unsubscribed everyone on purpose. I'm hoping its the former, but...
I wish I could re-subscribe everyone automatically. If I had
access to the server, I could do this quite easily, but I don't. :P
I apologize for the inconvenience, but could you all please re-subscribe?
To review the procedure:
Send a message to listserv@ait.fredonia.edu.
In the body of the message, put:
join dakota
for the regular version or:
digest dakota
for the digest version.
Actually, I might be able to pull off subscribing you all automatically.
I've got an idea which might just work... If it does, you should get a
message saying you've been subscribed to the DML. If you've already
re-subscribed, you'll probably get some type of error message that
tells you you're already subscribed. I don't know who was in what version,
so if you get the DML in digest version, you'll still have to switch
yourself over to digest mode yourself. (Do the same thing as you would to
join the list in digest mode.)
If for some reason I am no longer able to keep the DML on the
server it is currently on, we'll have to go back to the old
machine. In that case, I'll try to edit the software to eliminate those
old annoying error messages. I've seen mailing lists where the
administrator gets donations from the members in order to buy
list service from an ISP, but I'd definitely like to keep that
option as a last resort...
I apologize again for the inconvenience. I sure hope this is just
a temporary glitch and not just the start of our problems. :)
