I think in the low gears the limitation is getting all that flywheel
weight spun up to speed. Underdrive pulleys might be a help here, but
it still has a monster flywheel. I haven't heard anybody talk about
lightened flywheels yet. That was a popular mod for the old Datsun
PL510 (which I used to own, and they also have an active mailing list).
