Actually that was 7100#, 5 spd, 3.90 gears in a '96 club cab
with 5.2L... The '95 is rated to 6700#, but the '96 was raised
400#(why? I dunno)... The 5 speed is rated higher in towing
capacity than an auto (in at least the '95-'96 model years),
with both the V6 and V8. The club cab 4x2 has a maximum
combined gross vehicle weigh of 10,500#... Factor in the
4100# of my truck, that leaves only 6400# actually towing
capacity so-not to exceed the CGVW (however it's abbreviated!)
(which does not include payload in the truck--wife, kids, dirt bike,
etc.)

The 4x2 long bed 5.2l, 5 spd, 3.90 gear'd dakota has the highest
tow rating of 7400 for '96... But again, it only has a 10500 max
combined gross weight rating...

On a side note, all of the Truck mags. that do comparisons
between the big three have always given the Ford-Chevy higher
marks that the Dodge (mainly in the mileage dept)... Every
time I have read these articles they compare a Ford and Chevy
with the lower # rear end...(better mileage), while the Dodge has
a realistic 3.55 standard with automatic... The towing figures
are always better for Dodge in those articles, but they compared
base model trucks for 'Delivery Service' on the last one I read.
Put a 3.08 rear end in a Dakota or Ram... You'd get 20-22 mpg
easy!

Anyway, check your manual... that's were the towing ratings are listed... The important thing is to stay below the combined weight rating... Heck, my registration weight shows 3700#... If you add 7100# to that you get 10800#... close to the 10500# limit... My truck could only weigh 3700# without rims& tires, spare tire missing, 5 qt.s low on oil, 1/2 gallon of gas in the tank, and maybe helium in the air bag!!!
