The problem with off-roading in an auto vs stick isn't in the mud, it's on
the rocks. You generally want to feather the throttle extremely lightly,
and use the clutch to maintain even more control. It's hard on the clutch,
but auto's tend to be hard on axles. One too many bounces off some rocks
or too much power at the wrong time, and you're replacing driveshafts and
axles, instead of worrying about that damn burnt clutch smell. I don't
mind replacing the clutch, but those axles are 'real expensive'. The stick
allows much more control than any slushbox does. For mud-bogs, an
automatic is just as good as a stick, simply because momentum is what you
are trying to maintain, and the auto allows that even better than a stick.
