I picked up some Play-Doh at Wal-Mart today, and did this. The play-doh
was squashed pretty flat... Well, the bigger the piece of play-doh, the
less it seemed to get compacted, but when I used a small piece, it did get
squished pretty flat. (And stuck on the hood liner when I opened the hood,
as a matter of fact. It didn't rip a hole in it either, so as near as I
can figure, it is in contact with the hood liner, but I don't think its
under exreme pressure. I'd kinda like a cowl hood; maybe this is a good
excuse... ;-) Maybe then I'll go for a 4"; no, 5! Well, maybe 3 will be
fine. :-)

Some misc ramblings about having more air:

When I took the "breather" tube out of the truck, I noticed that it
went up to the grille, but has a sort of "cap" on it! I guess this is
to prevent bugs from getting in there or something. (Doesn't work, I've
picked bees out of my air can.) So, as near as I can figure, the stock
air setup forces the engine to actually suck air through this hose
that's mostly closed at one end! Geez, no wonder the truck sounds
different! Ahhhh, AIR!!! :-)

I was bored one day and did some calculations... The stock air
can gets all its air from an opening that is about 2.25 by 4.25 inches.
That's 9.56 square inches. On the other hand, a 14 by 3 open element
is 14*pi*3 = 131.95 square inches. 1380% more surface area! Whee!
