My '97 4x4 does the same thing. Talked to a Chrysler mechanic who has the
identical truck to mine and his does it also. He thinks it is a component
of the steering column linkage that is binding, then releasing. He wasn't
particularly concerned about it.

I also periodically feel and a faint 'thunk' through the wheel on braking
or acceleration. It was at the dealer today for something else, they did
find a bit of play in the linkage and have ordered a replacement part ...
sorry, but I don't know exactly part it is that they ordered. It'll be
replaced at the next service interval in January, hopefully that will clear
it up.
