Absolutely right. You can get in considerable trouble going off-road in a
National Park -- especially in ones like Jellystone and Glacier that are
"World Heritage Sites" -- the UN Blue Helmets will descend on you from their
black helicopters!

The National Forests still offer lots of good 4x4'ing. Most of the forests
haven't had enough money for road upkeep since the mid-80s, so even marked
roads can have some interesting (if not worthy) obstacles. Check with the
local Rangers office -- there will often be locked gates closing some roads.
Sometimes these are only seasonal closures, other areas are closed to
allow regrowth after fires and floods.
