Sorry that I'm just getting around to this now; been way too busy. :-(
I wouldn't call the space at Fredonia unlimited, but I do have a bit to
play with... (For now, anyway.) :-)
The club... Hmmmm.... :-)
Well, I've always considered the DML to be kind of a club. I thought
that maybe someday we'd do something similar to the MML and just have the
list be a "club" (just informal-like). I thought it would be neat to do
something like what the Denizens of Doom do; members make up patches,
T-shirts, basically anything that strikes their fancy; they sell 'em to
other members and the profit goes to the AMA Motorcycle Museum. In the
DML's case, it would probably go toward keeping the list running. Just a
thought I've had in the back of my mind for some time.
Re-reading that paragraph, I sort of come off sounding like all I care
about is money and that it all goes to me. :-) That's not the case; the
DML is already funded by contributions, but contributions are fairly
intangible I think (for the contributor). Buying a hat, or a shirt,
or a window sticker, etc gives you something while helping out the list at
the same time. (Sure, the list gets less money per contribution that way,
but it does give the contributor more I think, and would probably stimulate
more interest.) Darn, I still come off as a money grubbing jerk. Well,
its not that way, you'll just have to trust me. :-)
BTW (while I'm on the subject): Thanks VERY much to everyone who has
contributed to the list! (Dick Campagna, Michael Clark, David Deming,
Ron Gallimore, Bruce Hefner, William Ligon, Azie Magnusson, James McBride,
Gregg Omo, Richard Pyburn, Bill Tierney, and Robert Tufts) Thanks to these
folks, the DML will be around until at least January 2000!

You're certainly welcome to start a seperate club of course. If that
happens, I'd definitely like the DML to be very closely linked or related
to it.
Some random thoughts: A URL such as www.dakota.org or something similar
certainly sounds appealing, but there are some things to consider or
watch out for... For example, to register a domain name is $50/year, and
you have to pay for the first two years in advance. Someone would have to
own the name and take care of getting money and making sure Internic gets
their money every year. In my case, $50/year would keep the list running
for 5 extra months, so I don't consider it to be worth it for that kind of
money. (If there was a *really* huge contributor base maybe...)
Also, I'm not 100% on this, but I'm pretty sure that if you want an .org
address, you have to be a non-profit organization. That means paperwork,
taxes, etc. Someone would have to take care of all of that.
Well, there's my $.02. It comes off as sort of dissapproving, I know...
I didn't mean it to be that way; I just think that this is a bigger step
than some people might realize, and I think it would pay to carefully
consider all of the options and consequences before actually acting on
anything.
