Yes, you're correct. '94 and later models have the fuel filter inside
the gas tank. The '92 and '93 models have a fuel return line from the
pressure regulator, so fuel is constantly being filtered. I would hazard
a guess that the TBI Dakotas used a similar setup. The carburetted 3.9
got very bad marks from Consumer Reports for fuel problems, so it must
have had a completely different setup (as I would expect).

Nope, '93 was the last year.

'94 model trucks had to meet passenger car emissions standards, and I think
safety standards. The fuel system mod may have had something to do with the
latter.
