  Learn the engine's power curve by feel, then shift in order to maintain
the RPM in that range. There are no hard and fast rules for this; seat
of the pants is often a better meter than anything else, especially as you
try to drive while staring at the tach. Where did I misplace that butt-
dyno? ;)

  You can guesstimate the RPM range by looking at a graph of the engine's
power and torque curves against RPM. I think max power for my '95 was at
4400rpm, but there is no way I'm letting the RPMs sit that close to redline.

  Since I'm paranoid, I tend to keep my RPMs when I need performance in
the 3000-3500 range.
