Just a thought here, but most high power car radios (and some not so
high...) *do not* have a chassis ground return for the speakers. If
either of the speaker "ground" leads makes contact with chassis ground,
you will get results similar to what you describe.
I have not yet received my service manual, so I cannot confirm that this
is the case with the OEM radio.
