Now: Straight axle in a Dakota: Was: Finished my '88

Did you put a body lift in? I recall you asked about it a short time back.
What did you do for tires? They look great with a little added height..

I came up with this real sick idea of converting mine to a straight axle.
Been going around taking some measurements of other trucks, trying to figure
out what would be a good donor to the project. What I've come up with just
looks too easy. Has anyone else considered this kind of swap? I saw a photo
in the Readers-Rides section of one of the off-road magazines once, of a
Dakota that had been converted. The guy used the axle's out of a 79 Bronco.
After taking a few measurements, It looks like he made a very good choice.
The axle width is about the same. Bronco's and F-150's of the age had Dana 44
front axles with coil springs. The top of the spring towers, shock mounts and
drag link mounts are all bolted to the frame. The differential is on the left
side, like a Dakota. The width of the frame on a Bronco is 34" nose to tail.
The Dakota is wider at 40", narrows to 34" between the front wheels and back
out to 40" from behind the front wheels to the rear. I'd have to work out
where the drag link mounts are. I would be adding 6" of width to the back of
the drag links. I don't know if I want to spread them quite that far, so I
would have to fabricate mounting brackets to move them back in.

So now that I've tabled this idea, tell me if I'm nuts.

lift put on, rancho 9000's, and 31" tires with Ultra aluminum (doesn't rust)
wheels. It looks completely perfect, but right now i;m working on put
flowmasters on it, and then i'll be almost done. Email me if you want some
pictures, or if you have questions.
