This problem came up on this list last year and this is the fix I used
for the same problem. Open your hood and look at your steering column.
About half way up from the box there is a joint. This is where the
steering column collapses in a front end collision. If you take two
metal bars (I used aluminum) and place one on each side of that joint
and attach with two hose clamps at each end and tighten down . For some
reason this joint gets loose very easily and this will take out the play
in it. I have a 93 CC
4X4 and it worked great on mine . Also by using aluminum I am pretty
sure it will bend or the hose clamps will break upon impact. Bars should
be about 7" long , 1.5 " wide and .25" thick. Let me know how it works
for you.
