Hmmm... I had that problem happen to me not to long ago on my 97 V6 4x4.

It only happens when the steering system is under some kind of bind. Like
exiting a driveway
or where the driving surface is uneven. Sometimes it has been very loud to
the point of being
barly noticable. I havent heard it in quite a while... Seed to go away
emediatly after I toped off
my stearing fluid. Weird... even to see that it was a tad low for having
less than 10K miles.

Is this anything like what you are getting?
