NASCAR-type cowl induction

  I've also been thinking about this idea. What about cutting the firewall
away around the cowl vent, and replacing it with some sort of heavy mesh?
Or even just perforate the firewall many times, such that most structural
strength were left, but air could flow from the high-pressure cowl to
the lower-pressure underhood? That way the hardware could remain where it
is.

  Trouble is, I'm not really willing to poke a bunch of holes in my firewall
any time soon. ;)
