  One clever shadetree mechanic tip passed over the old hotrod list
(or possibly fordnatics, ha ha ha ;) supposedly helps to eliminate
tire pre-load during DIY alignments. Get 4 plates of sheet metal (not
light gauge) or steel plate stock, and squirt some motor oil in between,
making two "oil sandwiches." Place these sheets under your front tires.
This will allow you to move the tires around under load relatively easy,
and prevent alignment changes due to the tire position.
