Mike,
I bought a Thule rack today ( it was the plan the whole time). It
called a docking station. It fits any 1 1/4" or 2" (although you have
to order the size you need) hitch receiver. It's the best one that I
have seen. I will hold two bikes, and if you need more there is an add
on for it that will let you carry four bikes total.
The bikes mounts by the front tire and non-drive train side crank arm.
This works well considering I have four bikes and one on the way. My
biggest problem was my downhill bike, and my 24" cruiser. The downhill
bike has a Judy-DHO. Which would not mount on my Thule roof rack, which
held the bike by the fork and not the frame. The DHO doesn't allow you
to mount it on a fork mount. Also my 24" cruiser (in between a 20" BMX
and 26" mountain) did not have thick enough drop outs on the fork to
allow it to connect to old roof rack.
Thule makes three hitch rack that I know of. Two of them hold the bike
by the frame, one will let you lock the rack to the truck, and the bikes
to the rack, but this one had a lot of play while in the hitch. The
other doesn't lock to the truck, but fit snugly. The new rack was
designed by another company that Thule bought. It locks to the truck
with no play at the hitch. It also will allow you to lock the bikes to
the rack.
The rack is brand new, so you might have to look around for it, and I
assume that you have a hitch. The quality is awesome. They covered
everything with this one. The Docking station holds two bikes and cost
about $310, my friend owns a bike shop and I picked it up for $250. The
attachment that will allow you to carry to more bikes is about $150.
I was going to try and stuff the bikes under the cover, but then I
thought about all the money that I have wrapped up in bikes (over 10,000
now, with a 3,500 bike on order).
Let me know if you have any questions. Sorry about the length of this
reply. Let me know what you do?
