I've been pretty happy with my Dakota, until Saturday, Apr 5, 1998 =
when my engine connecting rod came apart. This happened with no warning =
signals whatsoever. It's only got 102,000 miles on it and I've =
religiously maintained it, plus I still have 3 payments left. My family =
accuses me of underutilizing the truck; I've never redlined or even come =
close, I drive the speed limit, never towed anything and probably got =
less than 100 hours in 4wd (never have the time). I just got the report =
from the local dealer - $5400.00 for the long block.

Sean: I haven't been keeping up with the DML lately (my dad died =
last week), and you've probably already bitten the bullet for a factory =
long block. After looking at the thread, however, I was really =
surprised to see that someone didn't suggest a crate motor from JEGS or =
Summit. Seems like one of the last Summit catalogs had both a 318 and a =
360 crate complete except for intake and exhaust for less than $4k, and =
if I remember correctly, there was one 360 crate rated at 350+ hp. The =
360, I think, is a direct drop-in replacement for the 318.
