Jim,

I spoke with the guy in MI that builds those motors. Don't remember his
name, but he helped GM with development of that particular turbo motor.
It was quite an interesting phone call. Seems some of the GM middle
management really wanted to get that project built, but had to justify
it to the upstairs people. They haggled about just how hot to make the
motor and tried many configurations from mild to wild. Some of their
dyno experiences were quite hilarious if you believe this guy. He says
he had to make some late night visits to the lab to fix a few fuckups
including the time he walked into the dyno room to find the two front
cylinders blown completely off one of the development motors! Seems the
middle mgmnt. guys tried hard as they could to hide the mistakes from
the upstairs boys so reliability wouldn't be a question.

Don't remember all the details as it's been 5 years since the
conversation, but there were some very amusing stories tossed out about
that motor coming to life. FWIW, the motor in my 100K old Typhoon was
never opened up. It definitely needed valve seals at the time I sold it
and God knows what else was about to go, but it was a fun truck.
