I'd check the oil carefully for particles - if you don't have a
magnetic drain plug, get one immediately. If you find anything in the
oil have it documented on a computer generated ticket that you can
keep a copy of. CYA for later. Also, ask about a performance cam and
ask if you can pay for the difference - they might say "ok" after all
you've been through.

Subject: DML: Lifter noise: the cause discovered...

Hello DML:

I am the person that has been complaining about a noisy lifter in my
'98
Dakota 4X4 5.2L (6K miles) Well, I scheduled an appointment to take
the
truck in today after calling Chrysler Customer Service and telling
them that
this is the 3rd time I've had the truck back for this problem, and I
want it
fixed. This afternoon I received a call from the service advisor. He
told
me that they found out what was causing the noisy lifter. It seems
that the
"keeper" on one of the lifters came loose and allowed the lifter to
rotate.
Since this engine has "roller" lifters (I didn't know that before)
the
roller rotated about 90 degrees out of line with the cam lobe
rotation,
gouging the cam lobe. So, they are going to replace the cam, the bad
lifter, and the keeper. They had to order the cam, so it should be
in
tomorrow morning, and they think the truck will be ready tomorrow
afternoon.
I hope it is, but mostly I want the truck put back together right. I
can't
imagine the amount of friction in the engine that this was causing.
Hopefully the truck will run much better when I get it back. Just
thought
that you all would like to hear what happened. Do any of you think
that
this problem could have caused a cylinder to run lean, causing my
pinging
problem? Or, the friction in the engine caused it to have a heavier
load?
Just curious. Thanks in advance for any replies.
