Mike,
    Be careful when doing that with your 88 Dakota. The A500 is known for
having a weak overdrive. When stomping on it at 60, the truck downshifts
out of overdrive, your RPMs jump up and as the truck accelerates, it will
slam back into overdrive at a higher RPM then normal. Do that enough times,
you'll break the snap ring that hold the clutch plates in the drum of the
overdrive unit. Eventually, it won't shift back into overdrive because
fluid pressure in the drum will push the clutches far enough apart to cause
them to slip. After popping mine for the second time, my tranny guy
explained to me how it happens.
