Chris,

Do you have a 1993 4x4? If so, in my experience the answer is yes/no. No,
you shouldnt have to, but...yes, you will have to (at least sometimes).
There isnt a thing wrong with my transfer case, but I still have to back up
sometimes before it'll disengage. Oh well.
