Hadn't heard that about N2O. That is interesting. Like to hear more about
it, and if it's true, and if N2O is worse, let's ask our congresspersons to
get rid of catalytic converters.

First, don't apologize for expressing your opinion. Second, I find it hard
to believe, and would suspect the auto industry (which makes so much money
off of us "use it and toss it" consumers) that the scientists used were some
how affiliated with an organization paid for in part or full by the auto
industry via funding, or political contributions or whatever. Basically,
it's all suspect. Each side. But I've learned to suspect the side that makes
the most money, or stands to profit the most in political agendas, more than
the side that's eating rice cakes and hugging trees. The more money
involved, the more complex the issues and problems.

I'll finish with this. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area. When a weather
inversion comes in (which is usually all summer long) the smog builds up so
thick you can hardly make out the outlines of skyline mtns, the san
jose/santa clara mtns, or your own hand in front of your face. Ok I
exaggerate, but its pretty bad, and if you think about it, you realize how
many cars drive in this area, and how quickly it builds up. When it clears,
you are relieved, but then you think, well it really didn't go that far
away. We are just one metropolis in this world. I've seen pictures in
Rolling Stone of Sao Paulo, Brazil. I've heard of the smog in europe, paris,
etc. It adds up. We should just realize that we all contribute. And the more
we evolve to a global economy (where everyone consumes as much as we do)
well, that's just scary. Especially if the population is going to double in
10 years. There are many ramifications. It boggles my mind. Sorry to depress
anyone.

And I don't mean to start a long thread about this. I love HP as much as
anyone. I built my first motor (an olds rocket 350 bored .30 over, crane
cam, edl manifold, 650 spreadbore dbl. pumper, on and on) when I was 18. I
still have that car ('72 cutlass convert.) I run a ducati 900 sssp around
the hills here and have removed most epa stuff. But, I don't jet ski. I'll
use an electric lawn mower if and when I have too. (gas mowers polute the
same as 40 cars over a 1 hour period.) I'm thinking about sailboating
instead of motorboating. I won't use gas leave blowers or anything that
mixes oil in the gas, if I can help it. (Sure am glad I didn't get into dirt
bike riding) Point is: It's all about balance. Most of us can keep a motor
running tip top, address maintanance issues as they arise, and run clean
motors. Good. But when you get behind someone smoking blue out their tail
pipe and stinking up your air, well, that's what's gotta go. It's an
education issue, I think. Ultimately, everyone would know this and the epa
wouldn't have to exist. Unfortunately, not everyone does so it does. It's
also a socio-economic issue. Some of us can afford the up-keep on our cars.
Others can't. And it seems to me that the ones who can't are growing in size
do to the whole separation of classes.

So, theoretically, a high performance engine should have low emmisions b/c a
combustion that burns the most fuel is going to exert the most force
downward on the piston, spinning the crank that much harder and faster, and
not having a whole lotta unburnt stuff leaving the tailpipe. Reducing CO2,
as a by product of the burnt gas, is another matter. Not sure if cats were
designed to reduce this or just hydrocarbons. Does the higher heat of a cat
burn CO2? It is possible to heat most anything up to a point where nothing
exists anymore.
