My 96 had the same problem. I removed the trim on the door, the entire
lock mechanism. The rust resistant coating had failed. In my opinion one
of the rivots used as a pivot point was headed improperly. Rust had frozen
the normal pivot point. Weather it was the rust resistant coating or the
heading, the pivot piont was frozen. I cleaned and lubed the entire lock
mech.
