If your talkin' 4x4 capability, your talking transmission/tcase and diff.
strength/performance not necessarily engine size... Anyway to answer your
question. If it's a V8 318 it's been around forever and therefore the same
great motor.
Most likely you have the NV231 Part-time Tcase and probably an open diff.
The only option your missing as compared to the 98's is a full time
Tcase... That's it.
Bottom line, no big difference and you've got a good basic/strong system.

Can anyone tell me if there is a big difference in the 4x4 capability of the
1996 dakota vs the 1997-98 dakota? The engines are the same aren't they?
