Usually you'll see "build up" on the tip of the rotor and the underside of
the wire terminals. I use some sandpaper to remove it and return it into
service a couple times before buying a new set.

A few quick questions, when should these be replaced? How
can I tell if
mine needs replacing?
Why go w/ a good one? Are we talking performance, or just
general
quality?
Thanks a lot,
Robert
