Brian,
You are correct. The 9 1/4 Axle has 12 pan bolts and
the 8 1/4 Axle has 10 pan bolts.
For you guys that are physically looking at your axles, if the
brake drum is finned, it is a 9 inch brake. If the brake drum is
smooth, it is a 10 inch brake. This is true for the '97, '98 and '99.
I'm not sure before that.
