DaimlerChrysler idles Missouri workers
ST. LOUIS, Nov. 27 (UPI) The two-week-old automaker DaimlerChrysler AG has
announced its first major layoffs in the United States.
A DaimlerChrysler spokesman told today's St. Louis Post-Dispatch
that 348 workers have been laid off indefinitely at the company's minivan
assembly plant in Fenton, Mo.
The Fenton minivan plant and an adjacent truck factory employ
4,600 workers. The layoffs begin Monday and affect nearly 8 percent of the
workforce.
DaimlerChrysler spokesman David Barnas the stem from the
company's decision to "shift to a normal production schedule" and eliminate
the so-called "tag" system of relieving workers on break.
The plant builds Plymouth Voyager, Dodge Caravan and Chrysler
Town & Country models. Through October calendar-year sales are flat for
Voyager, up 2 percent for Caravan and down 5 percent for Town & Country
compared with the same period 1997.
