RE: I´m back!

Hear, Hear! On the '70 Challenger! One of my very favorite cars.

I had a '68 Barracuda that ran fairly well back in those days. 318 that ran
around 220 - 230 hp.

Friend of mine had a '66 Dodge Coronet 440 with a 426 Hemi, 425 horses, 2 -
4bbls, factory headers, and when he bought it, it was setting on a pair of
6.50/14s. Couldn't even idle from a stop sign or red light without barking
the tires. He put L60s on it, biggest he could find at the time without
dipping into the wallet much deeper. Looked like a family car until you saw
that little insignia on the fender that said 426/HEMI.

A short story, well, ok, none of my stories are real short.

We were cruising down I75 between Lexington and Richmond Ky. Back when the
legal speed limit was still 70 mph. New Chevelle SS ('67) 396 cruised up
along side, started to pass and happened to glance down and see the little
emblem on the fender. He slowed down, and goosed the Chevelle, speed up,
slow down, speed up slow down, all the while making motions to the driver
that he wanted to run. Well, my friend says that if he keeps it up he will
have to dust him.

Sure enough he punched it and ran out about 3 car lengths and slowed down to
let us catch up. About the time he did that, my friend slipped the Hemi up
into third gear and waited...
The next time the guy in the Chevelle fired down on it, we did too. We
played along for 30-40 seconds just letting him think that he was running
right with us, then we hit fourth and dusted him good. We sailed out about
1/8 mile ahead pretty quickly, then backed off enough to just keep ahead of
him. We ran this way about 2-3 miles. Our speedometer was buried, don't
really know how fast we were going. I was looking back and watching to see
what our friend was doing now. Quite suddenly the Chevelle started slowing
down rather quickly, all of a sudden a big ball of blue-black smoke rolled
out and he sailed over to the side. Last we saw of him he had the hood
raised and was fanning blue smoke out of his face.

Oh, for the good old days!

Bill F

No luck accessing your Web site. Unless I´m under the truck wrenching,
I don´t have plans for this Saturday, and would love to join you guys.

Is that down at the SD Auto Museum?

Is the SDMC a chapter of the Walter P. Chrysler national club? I´ve thought
of joining that for awhile. I still want someday to own a ´70 Challenger,
and
a ´56 or ´57 Chrysler with the early Hemi.

And a very big garage!

Jim
