When trying to go out of state for a vehicle in California, think
about this:

Pay for local state tax, license in purchase state.

Local say- $22,000 truck, 10% for tax/license... another $2200.
Grand total in Cal. $24,000

Out of state you find it for $19,000, with a little lower state tax (if
any), and lower lic. fee (still around 1.5-2.25%).. figure
3%.. Ok, so 19000, 380 license, and 4% tax (not it CA!) $760 tax.

Grand total out of state (est.) $20140.. Now hold on.. $20140 is a lot
less than $24000.... Or is it.

The truck has to be registered in CAL.. So you get charged a nice $300
out of state reg. fee $20140+300.... $20440... Then CA. wants it's share
of the registration.. Guess what??? Gotta pay sales tax in CA. TOO...
here in San Diego 7.75% (one of the lowest)... So, 19000* 7.75% tax =
$1472.50... $20440+1472.50=$21912.50... THEN you
have to pay the license fees (about 2.25% on $19000)... So
$21912.5+$427.50... Grand Total now = $22340...

Now the total out the door difference is $24000 vs. $22340 = $1660...
Figure the time you spend going out of state, the smog test is also
required for bringing vehicles in to CA., so add another $100 for
that...$1560 difference.... That's not a big enough diffence to go out
of state.. You should be able to talk them down enough to beat that
easily...

Oh yeah, and if you finance the truck?? (Like most of us will), you
won't be able to buy out of your state... I wanted to do this in '95
with my Dakota. Wanted to buy it in Las Vegas... I could only get the
deal, then have them order the truck to be sent to my local dealer (that
agreed to the same deal), then have to go buy it locally.
A pain.

My $.02 ($1560) worth.
