The People's Republic of California is an exception (to alot of rules)
I think you could come out ahead more if you DIDN'T go back to CA :-)

When I bought out of state, it was living in CO, buying in AZ... the 2
states colaborate on sales tax.. if you pay in 1 state, it exempts you in
the other... granted the tax was 7.125 in AZ, and now that I'm out in the
country (CO bases sales tax you pay on vehicles off your ADDRESS!) I only
pay state sales tax, no city tax... 4.5%... that leaves a little more room
for the local dealer to come up... but at the time I lived in Colorado
Springs, and none of the dealers even came CLOSE to the quote I was getting
from AZ...

Now my wife wants to buy her brother's SS/T... that's another story...
Colorado charges sales tax on PRIVATE PARTY vehicle purchases! AZ does
not.... so we would have to do the transaction in AZ, and leave it
registered in AZ for 6 months (I think) before "bringing it into the state"
to get around the sales tax charge.

I believe the person asking the original question lives in Louisana (LA), so
he would probably get a good deal going to TX.
