How are they failing (a rear seal blowing out over & over is a different
problem than cracked cases)

If it is really stress related, you might check into the nv4500... it's a
steel case version of the 3500 with beefier innards.. it's what Dodge uses
behind the Diesel and V10.. I don't hear about problems with it in those
applications, except for 1 person who's towing 31,000Lbs GCWR (truck &
trailer)
