Its a public/private key system... The basic premise is that there are
two "keys" which are used, one is private (only the sender knows it) and the
other is public. (anyone can get it). When you "sign" a message, a sort
of "checksum" is generated using the content your private key. When the
recipient gets it, they can use your public key to determine if you really
sent
the message (only someone who has the sender's private key could have sent
it),
and it also can determine wether or not the message was changed at all.
(You can also encrypt the entire message so that only the recipient can read
it. You do that by encrypting it with the person's public key. Only the
person's matching private key will de-crypt it.) How difficult it is to sign,
encrypt a message, or verify the authenticity of a message depends on your
mailer.
I use Eudora Pro which is integrated with a program called PGPkeys, so its
really
easy for me.
